AFRA’s Press Release on the occasion of the International Women’s Day 2008
Six months after the 1st Black European Women’s Congress in Vienna 2007 and in relation to the International Women’s Day 2008 and the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue, AFRA – International Center for Black Women’s Perspectives (Austria) and Tiye International (The Netherlands) are again organising the first Strategic/Working Meeting of the Black European Women’s Network – BEWNET in Vienna, from the 13th - 14th of March 2008. BEWNET was founded at the Viennese Congress in September 2007.

What has happend since the Vienna Congress?
Sweden has so far organised two National Follow-up Meetings (Dec. 2007 and Feb. 2008) after the Viennese Congress, to feedback Swedish Black Women on this congress. At the second meeting they prepared themselves for the upcoming Follow-up Strategic Meeting in Vienna. You can find a detail report of these meetings under “Nationalplatforms”. The Swedish meetings have been organised under the leadership of Leah Sempaya.
Led by Yvette Jarvis, a National Follow-up Meeting took place in Athens-
Greece to inform other Blak Women in Greece about the Vienna Congres and get them involve in the follow-up activities
In Italy, Suzanne Diku organised two national meetings to inform and encourage Italian Black Women to join BEWNET.
Zeedah Meierhofer-Mengali is also preparing a National Meeting for Black Swiss Women in Switzerland, to inform them about the outcome of the Viennese Congress and involve them in the future activities of BEWNET. An overview of national activities shall be available soon.
The goal of the first Strategic/Working Meeting is to elaborate the Structure and Plan of Action of BEWNET. This important meeting will bring together 20 Black European Women from 7 EU Member States (of the 16 EU Member States represented at the Viennese Congress 2007) and from Switzerland, charged with the responsibilty to draft the structures of BEWNET.
The Follow-Up Strategic Meeting will take place in cooperation with the representative of the European Commission and the Information Office of the European Parliament in Vienna and the meeting venue will be their conference room .
